I am pretty sure that 三羊 (San Yang) is a reference to 三阳开泰 (sānyángkāitài) which means “with three yang prosperity begins”. The “阳” is a homophone of “羊” which means “sheep” or “goat”. This is a well-established word play and one can buy good luck statues of three mountain goats or sheep with the phrase inscribed on it. For this reason, I’ve decided to translate 三羊 as the “Three Sheep”, rather than “San Yang,” as I believe the deity to be a triad of divine sheep rather than a single being. Additionally, unlike Lord Ming, there is no “祂” (the He for a god) pronoun used. If evidence comes up to disprove this later, I will make a correction.
