Welcome to the world of Guo Tian Men! There are some unique aspects to the way things work in this world compared to others in the genre.
In many Xianxia novels (仙侠) there are "Cultivators" (修者 xiūzhě, 修士 xiūshì, or 修仙者 xiūxiānzhě), but in the world of Guo Tain Men, the most prominent type is the "Tongshen" (通神者 tōnghshénzhě). A Tongshen or a "Divine Practitioner," or perhaps a "Cleric," are those who access their spiritual powers directly through various Divinities. They call upon Gods, Nature Spirits, and even Ghosts to cast spells, power talismans and seals, and sometimes even directly summon the entity in question to perform a task for them.
The most common way Tongshen are depicted using magic is through "Orders," which are a kind of prayer condensed into a one-three-word phrase (in Chinese, the Order is always two characters). Each Sect or Clan has unique Order Arts which reflect their cultural beliefs and the divinities they draw power from. Aside from casting these Order spells, they can draw talismans or seals, or utilise magic artefacts or tools that are already infused with some kind of divinity. However, (in most cases) no matter how they are using these powers, a Tongshen must recite a verbal component to activate their magic.
More than 200 years ago, the Six Prefectures was at war with itself. At that time, there were four mountains which held up the Four Heavenly Pillars. Each of these pillars corresponded with the cardinal directions and was protected by a sect. However, during the war, two of the four Heavenly Pillars collapsed, along with one mountain. When the pillars collapsed, the Heavenly Rift was formed, as water poured down from the sky and led to further problems.
Even though the war has long ended, the Six Prefectures have not yet returned to order. However, one "sect," the Divine Order Division, has made it their mission to oversee all matters under heaven and earth. Although some feel the Divine Order Division has gone against the natural order, it is the largest and most powerful group in the land.
